Careers

Leeway is founded on a set of core values that were developed by Rob Lee and Yarrow Murphy early in the life of the company. These values embody our company culture and philosophy of customer service. When we recruit new employees, we ensure that they are aligned with these values and we believe that our shared values contribute to employee satisfaction, retention, and performance. These values, and how we live them out, are described briefly below.

COMMUNITY

We participate in leadership and committees of professional organizations, with six of our company’s ten employees currently active in these roles. Over the last three years, we have given more than  $100,000 of our profits to local community organizations.

INCLUSION

Our recruitment and hiring practices exemplify this value. We include staff at all levels in the vetting process and recommendations on whether or not to hire a candidate. Recent hires were referrals identified by junior staff. We believe this inclusion is one reason for the diversity represented on our team and will contribute to staff longevity over time.

INTEGRITY

This value is really internal to each individual, but also critical in a current era of remote work. We are often working independently without colleagues within earshot. While we fundamentally trust everyone in our company to have high levels of integrity, we take it very seriously and would take swift action if we ever learned that trust was breached.

FOCUS ON OTHERS

Our value of others drives us to further our profession, and first and foremost provide services that are of value to our clients and communities.

Leeway Engineering Solutions seeks a staff engineer with 0 to 4 years of experience as a consultant in the water or wastewater engineering industry. Ideally, this person would have experience and interest in pipeline rehabilitation design and/or collection system modeling and planning. A person with transferrable skills could also be a good fit, with experience in areas such as data analysis or engineering design.

The successful candidate will be part of our team implementing a number of projects for public clients in the Pacific Northwest. The Staff Engineer role supports the implementation of projects under the guidance of one or more senior-level leads and in collaboration with other engineers of varying levels of experience. Our staff have a broad range of skills and assignments (see a few examples below) and everyone on our team receives opportunities to see the full picture results of their efforts and the positive impacts we have on the communities we serve.

Essential Qualifications/Skills
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • Have successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination strongly encouraged.
  • 0 to 4 years of experience in the water/wastewater industry.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent task assignments.
  • Ability to communicate with team members and clients, including email, in-person, and virtual.
  • Ability to independently implement steps assigned by project or task lead.
  • Ability to keep files and information organized.
  • Experience with technical writing, including specifications for construction contracts and documents presenting results of engineering studies.
  • Ability to work with larger datasets to extract essential information for use in analytical studies or model development.
  • Experience working with ESRI GIS products, ArcGIS Pro preferred.
  • Data analysis skills (i.e. Python, SQL, PowerBI, VBA) are a plus.
Example Assignments
  • Developing construction documents for pipeline rehabilitation: This assignment involves field work to understand site conditions and constraints, reviewing inspection videos and defect data, and organizing and compiling information into a construction-ready document.
  • Create design drawings for a pipeline rehabilitation project in GIS: This task combines managing and editing data with creating maps and layouts for efficient production of plan sheets.
  • Analyzing and developing plans to help clients reduce sewer overflows: This assignment would entail a review of flow data, overflow events, site conditions, and pipe conditions and recommending cost-effective strategies to address high-flow sources.
  • Developing a collection system hydraulic model as part of a master plan for a community in the Pacific Northwest: This assignment includes processing large datasets, detailed quality control to resolve model errors, calibrating model flows, and using the calibrated model to simulate a storm event to test hydraulic performance of a collection system and identify deficiencies.
Work Environment

This position is based in Portland, Oregon, and will consist primarily of working from home, with some in-office work expected as well. The schedule of in-office work will be determined at the time of hire, based on the hire’s experience and qualifications. Thereafter, changes to the amount of time in office will be determined based on performance and need. Sometimes, fieldwork or short travel to other locations within Oregon or Washington will be required. Because of the hybrid environment, the ability to work independently, stay focused, and stay motivated is critical to your success in this role.
